Early Career in Financial Markets

James began his career in the financial markets at a young age. At 24, he became one of the youngest seat holders and market makers on the Pacific Stock Exchange. During his time on the exchange, his peers elected him Chair of the Nominating Committee for the Board of Governors, reflecting early confidence in his judgment and leadership.

He later held roles at firms including Letco LMM, Joseph D. Heard Jr. Inc., Premier Trading Group, and Charles Schwab. At Letco, he served as a Partner and Lead Market Maker. The firm was later acquired by Toronto Dominion Bank in 2002.

During these years, James developed expertise in derivatives, trading strategies, and market structure—experience that later informed his entrepreneurial work and investment perspective.

Entrepreneurship and Company Building

In 2004, James founded Burleson & Company, an independent advisory firm that worked with individuals and families on long-term investment strategy and financial planning.

James later expanded his work through Northern Peak Consulting, where he collaborates with founders and leadership teams on strategy, positioning, and business development.

His entrepreneurial activities have also included participation in early-stage ventures and strategic initiatives. Through BCo Venture Fund I and other private business projects, he has supported emerging companies and entrepreneurs pursuing new opportunities.

One example includes early involvement with Pathwater, a company focused on sustainable alternatives within the bottled water industry.

Community Involvement and Service

Community service has been an important part of James’s life alongside his professional work.

For nearly two decades he has served as a member of the Sonoma–Marin Fair Board, supporting agricultural education, youth development, and community programs.

He was also active with the Rotary Club of Petaluma for more than ten years, including serving as Treasurer of the Rotary Club Foundation.

Faith and education have also guided his community engagement. James served on the St. Vincent Parish Finance Committee for more than twenty years and has contributed to local educational and charitable organizations including:

  • Petaluma Educational Foundation
  • Boys & Girls Club
  • Polly Klaas Foundation

These efforts reflect his longstanding belief that strong communities depend on sustained civic participation.

Personal Life

James grew up in a military family, an experience that instilled a strong sense of discipline, adaptability, and perspective. He later attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied finance and remained active in the Sigma Chi fraternity.

Today he balances professional work with family and personal interests. A lifelong skier, he introduced his children to the sport early, and the family has spent time skiing throughout the American West.

He also enjoys golf, travel, and following financial markets.

Continuing Work Today

Today James focuses on strategic advisory work, private business initiatives, and collaborating with entrepreneurs during key stages of company development.

His work continues to center on helping organizations clarify strategy, strengthen positioning, and pursue sustainable long-term growth.
